Copyright Decision Tree

When you perform a copyright analysis, the first thing that you need to do is determine if the material being considered is protected by copyright. If it is, then you have to determine if your usage complies with stated exemptions.

Print and complete the decision tree referenced below.

Copyright Decision Tree

Indicate your decision path on the form, sign, date and retain the document with related paperwork (e.g., course or research materials) in case questions arise concerning usage and how you reached your decision in the future.

If the material is NOT PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT, you are done. File your paperwork and go home.

If the material is PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT, please return to Step 2 of the Analysis Workflow to see if your planned usage qualifies for an exemption.
